In the heart of Codri They say that Moldova resembles the legendary Mesopotamia with its garden-towns and its agricultural lands. These are spread out like a mosaic among the forest areas, meadows, small rivers and picturesque lakes – which form true natural oases for a very diverse wildlife. Many of these areas are protected as prime examples of Moldova’s unique natural heritage. The oldest scientific reserve of Moldova – “Codri”, founded on 27 September, 1971, located near the village Lozova, about 50 km from Chisinau. Currently, the reserve surface constitutes 12 300 hectares. It is divided into three functional zones - a strictly protected zone, buffer zone, transition zone. The nature here surprises by the variety of forms and species that are rare or can disappear. There are about 1 thousand species that are under state protection that includes a half of Moldovan fauna, 43 species of mammals, 145 species of birds, 7 species of reptiles, 10 types of amphibians and more then 10 thousand species of insects. Oaks and beeches predominate here. On the territory of the reserve there is a “Museum of Nature” - the unique collection of rare samples of flora and fauna of Moldovan woodland - «Codri». |
