Capriana monastery The monastery is located in the picturesque woodland - Codri, about 40 km from Chisinau city. For a long time the monastery was the residence of the Metropolitan of Moldova and it was patronized by many Rulers of Moldova including Steven the Great. And it is known that the Moldovan State chronicler Eftimie as well as the first poet of Moldova Chiprian lived here. For the first time, the monastery was mentioned in historical documents in 1429 and it was entirely constructed in wood. In 1541 the first stone «Virgins’ Assumption» church was erected. In January 2003, by the decision of Moldovan government a supervisory board was established for controlling the process of Capriana monastery reconstruction. In 2008 the reconstruction was finished and nowadays the monastery in all its beauty is open to the public. Among other sights worthy to be visited in this landscape natural reserve "Capriana-Skoreni”, is an oak tree of Steven the Great period and the oldest scientific reserve of Moldova –“Codri”.
